The State Government says it does not know if it can provide the necessary infrastructure to support more liquefied natural gas plants in the north.

The energy company Chevron says it will spend billions of dollars building a liquefied natural gas plant to process its Wheatstone gas discovery off the north west coast.

The company will also build gas processing and port facilities on the mainland between Karratha and Onslow.

The Treasurer, Eric Ripper, is concerned about how the state will service another huge resources project.

"What really concerns me is our ability to service a number of different LNG sites with all of the infrastructure that the state would be required to provide," he said.

The Petroleum Production and Exploration Association has welcomed Chevron's announcement, saying it highlights the nation's strategic advantage in clean natural gas.
