The West Australian Premier Colin Barnett is challenging the idea that Darwin is a "done deal" for the 12 billion dollar Inpex Liquefied Natural Gas processing plant.

Mr Barnett is meeting with Inpex executives in Japan next week, in a last minute bid to win the project for WA.

He says it's not absolutely certain the plant will go to Darwin because the company is still talking to Western Australia, and the gas is off the state's coast.

"It's an 800 kilometer pipeline subsea, and the latest I heard is it costs four million dollars a kilometer to build at subsea," Mr Barnett said.

"Every kilometer you can save is a lot of money, and by building it in Western Australia we'd save probably five or six hundred kilometers of length."
