VASCO, June 18 -- The Mormugao Action and Development Committee ( MADC) has said that it would oppose moves to set up LPG storage facilities at Bogda-Vasco.
Addressing a press conference, MADC Convenor Sankalp Amonkar claimed that residents had been opposed to the construction of earlier tanks and as such, they would continue to oppose these proposed storage facilities as well.
Setting a deadline for the company to stop ongoing work by Monday, Amonkar has warned that residents of Sada, Bogda and other parts of Mormugao will march to the company and would forcefully stop ongoing work after the deadline.
"Since the area belongs to MPT, the MPT had earlier assured residents of Bogda that no hazardous liquid material would be stored in the tanks. However over a period of time, the tanks which were constructed to store edible oil are now storing petroleum products and MPT has remained a mute spectator," said Amonkar.
"In the past, two major mishaps took place inside the company, but the company hushed up the matter.
Even the insurance company did not pay them compensation as the company did not have any safety measures in place." " The company is presently storing sulphuric acid, ammonia and furnace oil without any permission from local authorities. The company has now started excavating the area to construct two LPG storage tanks for a capacity of 40 metric tonnes," claimed Amonkar.
He claimed that the company had not availed of permission from authorities concerned to set up the LPG storage facilities.
"The importers of LPG are from Maharashtra and Karnataka and since Goa Port is close to both these places, it is being stored at Bogda," alleged Amonkar.
