Project description
Texada Island LNG is a proposed combined natural gas and power generation facility at Kiddie Point on Texada Island in the Strait of Georgia, British Columbia.
The facility will include a marine jetty and berthing facility, two onshore LNG storage tanks, a natural gas-fired combine cycle power generation facility, marine cooling water, interconnection with the existing Terasen natural gas pipeline on site, and administrative facilities. An interconnection line also will be necessary between the site and existing BC Hydro transmission line, which crosses Texada Island and supplies electricity to Vancouver Island.
The marine jetty is capable of receiving double-hulled LNG carriers of up to 165,000m3 capacity, smaller-capacity barges, and tugboats, with transfer piping to onshore LNG storage tanks.
Onshore, there will be two full-containment LNG storage tanks, each with a gross volume of 165,000m3 capacity for storage. There will also be an LNG re-gasification plant with a capacity of up to 500 million cubic feet per day; in-tank and external LNG export and trans-shipment pumps; a vapor handling system; and pipeline interconnection and compression.
The power generation facility will comprise natural gas-fired turbines and heat-recovery steam generators--along with a sub-station, a 500-kV transformer, and a short interconnection line. The co-location of the LNG and power generation facilities will allow WestPac to minimize power needs by using waste heat from the power generation turbines to re-gasify the LNG.
The project will cost an estimated $2 billion and is expected to go online in 2014. It will provide more than 75 full-time permanent jobs on-site, and more than 300 jobs will be needed during construction.
