The North Dakota System Expansion Phase 6 project plans to increase its capacity in order to relieve the bottleneck effect that shippers are currently experiencing on the current pipeline. Installing certain appropriate upgrades at existing pump station sites will increase the transportation capabilities.

These upgrades should enable EPND to transport 51,600 barrels per day of crude petroleum from the Williston Basin of North Dakota and Montana to the Enbridge Clearbrook metering facility. The pipeline connects with other pipeline systems that serve destinations in the upper Midwest and eastern Canada.

There are several locations of refining centers throughout the Midwest that connect to the Enbridge Lakehead System and Minnesota Pipeline. Shippers can access most of the major crude oil refinery markets along the Great Lakes and in the Midwest through both current and planned interconnecting pipelines.

According to Enbridge, this expansion is designed to benefit regional crude oil explorers, producers and refiners by helping to relieve a petroleum transportation bottleneck within the region.

Shippers making long-term volume commitments to support the Phase 6 expansion will be given priority transportation service on its entire system once the Phase 6 expansion facilities go into service.
