Catalytic Cracking is the refining process whereby hydrobarbons with heavier molecular weights are broken down into hydrocarbons with lighter molecular weights. More specifically, cracking consists of the breaking of carbon-carbon bonds in the precursors of the hydrocarbons. This process takes place under very high pressure and temperatures and through exposure to a chemical catalyst.
