Pipeline pigs are tools inserted into pipelines that travel the length of the pipeline pushed by a product flow. Originally exlusively used to remove deposits which could obstruct flow through a pipeline, today pipeline pigs are used for many reasons. Pipeline pigs are now used to separate dissimilar products, for displacement purposes, and for internal pipeline inspection. An example of an advanced pipeline pig is the Smart Pig.
