Polish gas company PGNiG SA is studying the
possibility of building a link to the planned Nabucco gas pipeline, the newspaper Parkiet quoted the head of
PGNiG's supervisory board as saying.
The 3,300-kilometer Nabucco pipeline, which aims to bring gas from the
Caspian Sea region to central Europe, with a planned maximum capacity of 31
billion cubic meters per year, will cross Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and
end in Baumgarten an der March, a major natural gas hub in Austria.
Work on the Nabucco pipeline is expected to begin in 2009 and end in 2012.
"Connecting to this pipeline is one of the options we are considering. (...)
Much will depend on whether oil supplies from Iran are ensured for Nabucco,"
PGNiG's Stanislaw Rychlicki told Parkiet.
"For the time being we are treating this project as one of the possibilities
for diversifying our supplies. We will look closely at this concept."
Analysts say PGNiG's room for maneuvering in its already extensive investment
plans may be limited by a decision by regulators last week to limit a rise in
gas prices to less than half of the 33 percent proposed by PGNiG.
